Press Release/Preaseisiúint: New Pipers’ Society/Cumann na nPíob Úr

Northern Pipers’ Society

We are delighted to announce the establishment of new traditional music society in Belfast. The Northern Pipers’ Society aims to promote traditional music, and piping in particular, amongst the general public in the North of Ireland and further afield through quality tuition, regular sessions, workshops, concerts and much more.

Uilleann piper and co-founder John McSherry says “I am delighted to be involved in this new venture and look forward to working with the Duncairn Centre of Culture & Arts in order to promote piping here in Belfast and further afield. We are blessed to have world class performers such as uilleann piper Darragh Murphy and bagpiper Ross Hume giving their expert tuition on a weekly basis. It is the first time, to our knowledge, a group like this has been established in Belfast to promote both piping traditions and we hope to bridge the gap which exists between them.”

Classes begin on Monday the 9th of February at 7.30 until 8.30. Pipers of all levels, beginner to advanced are welcome. McSherry also states “The main focus of our activities will be the teaching of the pipes to an exceptional standard as it is through this that the playing of the instrument will  prosper and develop.  As well as piping classes, the society will be offering tuition on a variety of other instruments and regular workshops on pipe maintenance, reed making and other crafts.”

The Society will organise an annual festival, bringing the best of Piping and traditional music to Belfast and will also offer services for weddings, corporate events, celebrations,  and so forth throughout the year.

Beidh Cumann na bPíob Uladh ag eagrú Féile bhliantiúil, ag tabhairt árdán d’árdchaighdeán ceol thraidisiúnta agus píobaireacht, i mBéal Feirste.

The classes will be held on Monday evenings in the Duncairn Centre for Culture and Arts located at the Duncairn Complex, Duncairn Ave, Belfast. For further information on classes, membership and Northern Pipers’ Society events visit or contact us at
