In 2021, Na Píobairí Uilleann will award 15 piping scholarships. Given that many summer schools will be cancelled this year due to ongoing restrictions surrounding COVID-19, successful applicants in 2021 will instead be offered a course of private tuition with an established piper to take place via Zoom or similar online platform. Scholarship recipients will also receive a range of Na Píobairí Uilleann’s publications and learning resources.

Scholarship recipients from 2020 who carried their scholarships over into 2021 will also be offered this alternative arrangement.

The scholarship process is open from Monday 1st March until midday Friday 30th April 2021. Applications must be supported by recordings of solo piping by the applicant. Please see the application form for full terms and conditions.

Pipe-making Mentoring Scholarships awarded to BCFE graduates as harp-making commences
,

Press Release on behalf of Na Píobairí Uilleann, October 2020 (see Irish below)

NA PÍOBAIRÍ UILLEANN (NPU) has awarded two Pipe-making Mentoring Scholarships in memory of legendary piper and pipe-maker Leo Rowsome whose anniversary was celebrated last month.

This is the latest initiative in NPU’s instrument making programme which is run in partnership with Ballyfermot College of Further Education (BCFE). After being announced earlier this year, harp-making has now commenced as part of this innovative programme meaning that, for the first time in the history of the State, the making of Ireland’s two most iconic instruments is being taught formally through a structured curriculum.

After receiving a number of excellent applications for the inaugural Rowsome Scholarships, NPU has issued awards to two emerging pipe-makers – Mark Blackwell of Co. Meath and Dubliner Eoin Dillon.

The Mentoring Programme (supported by the Design and Crafts Council Ireland) will see the scholarship recipients paired with established pipe-makers who will provide mentoring on a one-to-one basis in their workshop over an intensive period.

Mark Blackwell, a graduate of BCFE, and Eoin Dillon (2nd year, BCFE) have undertaken training at Na Píobairí Uilleann’s PipeCraft centre in Clonshaugh as part of the college’s Higher National Diploma in Irish Traditional Music Performance Programme (Ceoltóir).

As part of the Mentoring Programme, both students will receive detailed feedback on pipes they have made already, further direction from skilled pipe-makers as well as experiencing the workings of an operational workshop.

Blackwell will receive mentoring from Achill Island pipe-maker John Butler while Dillon, who has already worked with maker Cillian Ó Briain, will visit Co. Laois pipe-maker Patrick Hyland.

Fifty years after Leo Rowsome’s death, his work continues to inspire and set an example of excellence for today’s uillean pipe makers.

In tribute to Rowsome, Na Píobairí Uilleann is keen to support the development of emerging pipe-makers and provide the opportunity for established pipe-makers to convey their unique skills.

About Na Píobairí Uilleann

Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU), the Society of Uilleann Pipers, was founded in 1968 when there were fewer than 100 uilleann pipers remaining. Today NPU is a thriving arts organisation dedicated to Sharing the Sound of Ireland through Access, Education, Performance and Preservation.

Since unveiling its restored Georgian premises at 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin, in January 2007, NPU has been busy catering for the expanding demand for regular tuition, as well as releasing a number of significant publications and recordings. With demand for pipes considerably exceeding supply, a dedicated Training Centre – PipeCraft – was established in 2011 to deliver training in the very highly skilled craft of uilleann pipe making.

NPU is accredited to UNESCO as a competent NGO in the field of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH).

NPU lobbied the Irish Government to ratify the UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage which resulted in the inclusion of Uilleann Piping on the UNESCO representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2017.

Na Píobairí Uilleann’s primary funding agencies include the Department of Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht, The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Dublin City Council.

Bronntar Scoláireachtaí Meantóireachta Dhéanamh Píob ar chéimithe de chuid CBBF agus cuirtear tús le déanamh cláirseach

Preaseisiúint de chuid Na bPíobairí Uilleann, Deireadh Fómhair 2020

Tá dhá Scoláireacht Mheantóireachta Dhéanamh Píob bronnta ag NA PÍOBAIRÍ UILLEANN (NPU) i gcuimhne ar an bpíobaire agus ar an ndéantóir píob oirirc Leo Rowsome, a ndearnadh comóradh air an mhí seo caite.

Is é seo an tionscnamh is déanaí i gclár dhéanamh uirlisí NPU atá á reáchtáil i gcomhar le Coláiste Breisoideachais Bhaile Formaid (CBBF). Tá tús curtha anois leis an ndéanamh cláirseach, a fógraíodh mar chuid den chlár cruthaitheach seo níos luaithe i mbliana. Mar sin, den chéad uair i stair an stáit, tá déanamh an dá uirlis is mó a shamhlaítear leis an tír á mhúineadh ar bhonn foirmiúil trí churaclam struchtúrtha.

Tar éis dóibh neart iarratas ar ardchaighdeán a fháil, bhronn NPU gradaim ar bheirt déantóirí píob atá ag teacht chun cinn – Mark Blackwell, arb as Contae na Mí é, agus Eoin Dillon, arb as Baile Átha Cliath é.

Mar chuid den scéim mheantóireachta (a fhaigheann tacaíocht ó Chomhairle Dhearadh agus Cheardaíochta na hÉireann), cuirfear gach scoláire ag obair le déantóir aitheanta ar leith a chuirfidh meantóireacht aonair ar fáil ina cheardlann féin thar dhlúth-thréimhse ama.

Rinne Mark Blackwell, céimí de chuid CBBF, agus Eoin Dillon (an dara bliain, CBBF) traenáil ag ionad PipeCraft NPU i gCluain Seach mar chuid den Ard-Dioplóma Náisiúnta i Léiriú an Cheoil Thraidisiúnta (Ceoltóir).

Le linn an chláir mheantóireachta cuirfear aiseolas grinn ar fáil do na mic léinn ar phíoba a rinne siad cheana, gheobhaidh siad breis stiúrtha ó dhéantóirí cumasacha, agus gheobhaidh siad cur amach ar an obair a dhéantar i bhfíorcheardlann.

Déanfaidh an déantóir John Butler, arb as Acaill dó, meantóireacht ar Blackwell, agus tabharfaidh Dillon, a chaith seal ag obair le Cillian Ó Briain cheana, cuairt ar Patrick Hyland i gContae Laoise.

Cé go bhfuil caoga bliain ann ó bhásaigh Leo Rowsome, spreagann a chuid oibre eiseamláireach lucht dhéanamh píob go fóill inniu.

Mar chomhartha ómóis ar Rowsome, ba mhaith le NPU tacaíocht a thabhairt do dhéantóirí píob atá ag teacht chun cinn agus deis a thabhairt do dhéantóirí seanbhunaithe a gcuid scileanna a chur ar taispeáint.

Chuaigh NPU i mbun stocaireachta le Rialtas na hÉireann chun go ndaingneodh sé Coinbhinsiún UNESCO maidir le hOidhreacht Chultúir Dholáimhsithe. De thoradh ar sin chuir UNESCO Píobaireacht Uilleann ar a Liosta Ionadaíoch d’Oidhreacht Chultúir Dholáimhsithe an Chine Daonna i Nollaig 2017.
