Some suggestions when buying pipes
- If you are new to uilleann piping, start with a practice set (chanter, bag and bellows). Drones and regulators can be added to a practice set at a later stage to form a half or full set.
- Most beginners learn on a concert pitch chanter. Most classes and workshops are taught using concert pitch pipes.
- If you are new to playing uilleann pipes, try to buy directly from a reputable pipemaker.
- Do as much research as possible. Are there videos or audio performances available of pipes by the maker? Are there established players playing pipes by the maker? Can you find local pipers who play similar sets and ask their opinion?
- Are there climatic issues in your location that will have to be considered by the pipemaker? Issues that may have to be taken into account can include variations in humidity, or high altitude. The pipes will require reeds that suit your location.
- If you have no experience playing pipes it can be difficult to identify problems with second-hand pipes. There may be legacy reed issues and/or bellows and bags that are porous or leak. Some of these issues are only apparent to an experienced player or teacher.
- Know exactly what you want before you order. Factors that need to be considered include: right or left handed set, pitch, materials, number of keys on the chanter.
- When and where possible, try to buy from a maker that you can easily visit. Your pipemaker should be able to assist with setting up the pipes to suit your physical size with belts, bag neck and blowpipe lengths that are appropriate to you.
- When ordering, establish an agreed final price, payment arrangements and a suitable date of delivery for the pipes.
- Ensure that the pipes are in tune and made to your satisfaction before you make full and final payment. If you are inexperienced, try to get a piper to try them out on your behalf.
- Confirm with the pipemaker costs for a replacement reed or any maintenance that may be required.
- Learn basic maintenance for your pipes and be prepared for some general upkeep activities, ensuring hemped joints are a good fit and that the chanter reed is securely in position.
- If you are having difficulty with your new pipes consult with the pipemaker and/or your teacher.
