Uilleann Pipers unveil strategy to share the sound of Ireland

Press release on behalf of Na Píobairí Uilleann

Thursday May 5th 2022

Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU) is delighted to announce the launch by Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, TD of Sharing the Sound of Ireland: a comprehensive new strategy to guide one of Ireland’s leading traditional arts organisations for the next three years.

Sharing the Sound of Ireland is a highly ambitious yet practical blueprint for NPU to realise its visionary aim of bringing the traditions and music of the Irish uilleann pipes to the world. The plan’s framework is constructed on NPU’s four objective pillars of Access, Education, Performance and Preservation, delivered through the organisation’s commitment to excellence in value and processes. The ambitious strategy outlined in this document is designed for expansion whilst retaining current in-demand programmes. Visionary goals laid out in this document include the building of an International Uilleann Piping Centre and Theatre at 16 Henrietta Street. We believe that this strategy will prove to be invigorating, convincing and exciting for our membership, staff, Board, and stakeholders over the next three years.

The formulation of the strategy followed a rigorous process which included membership surveys and facilitated workshops, and as a result we believe, that it is aligned with common objectives we share with a broad range of stakeholders.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD said:

“It gives me great pleasure to announce the launch of Sharing the Sound of Ireland, Na Píobairí Uilleann’s comprehensive new strategy for 2022-2024.  Na Píobairí Uilleann has successfully preserved a musical tradition that is indelible and unique to our island.  Na Píobairí Uilleann has preserved tradition, enlivened our culture and ensured the future of the Uilleann Pipes. This new strategy is a series of planned, interlinked actions to support the growth and creativity of Uilleann Piping at home and around the world.”

NPU Chief Executive and uilleann piper Gay McKeon also commented:

‘Na Píobairí Uilleann’s founders, who were pipers themselves, had a very clear vision for the organisation back in 1968 when the very future of the instrument was far from certain. That vision, based on the promotion of piping, pipes and traditional music through tuition and conservation, underpins this new strategy which tailors these fundamental aims for the 21st century and the global reach of NPU. We are very grateful for the ongoing financial support of both the Arts Council and the Department Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media which has contributed to an exponential growth in the playing and making of uilleann pipes, a unique and iconic element of our rich cultural heritage.’

Na Píobairí Uilleann

Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU), the Society of Uilleann Pipers was founded in 1968 when there were less than 100 uilleann pipers remaining. Today NPU is a thriving arts organisation dedicated to Sharing the Sound of Ireland through Access, Education, Performance and Preservation.

Since unveiling its restored Georgian premises at 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin, in January 2007, NPU has been busy catering for the expanding demand for regular tuition, as well as releasing many significant publications and recordings. With demand for pipes considerably exceeding supply, a dedicated Training Centre – PipeCraft – was established in 2011 to deliver training in the very highly skilled craft of uilleann pipemaking.

NPU is accredited by UNESCO as a competent Non-governmental Organisation in the field of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). NPU lobbied the Irish Government to ratify the UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage which resulted in the inclusion of Uilleann Piping on the UNESCO representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2017.

In 2021, NPU achieved the Diversity Bronze Award from the Irish Centre for Diversity.

Na Píobairí Uilleann’s primary funding agencies include The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, and Dublin City Council.

Nochtann Píobairí Uilleann straitéis le fuaim na hÉireann a scaipeadh

Preaseisiúint de chuid Na bPíobairí Uilleann

Déardaoin 5 Bealtaine 2022

Tá áthas ar Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU) seoladh Sharing the Sound of Ireland leis an Aire Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán, Catherine Martine TD, a fhógairt inniu. Straitéis úr, chuimsitheach é seo le ceann de phríomheagraíochtaí ealaíon traidisiúnta na hÉireann a threorú sna trí bliana atá amach romhainn. Is treoirphlean uaillmhianach ach praiticiúil é Sharing the Sound of Ireland don NPU, leis an aidhm fhísiúil atá aige traidisiúin agus ceol na bpíob uilleann Éireannach a scaipeadh ar fud an domhain mhóir a chur i gcrích.

Tá creathach an phlean bunaithe ar cheithre philéar chuspóireacha NPU; piléar na Rochtana, an Oideachais, an Taispeántais agus an Chaomhnaithe, a chuirtear ar fáil trí thiomantas na heagraíochta d’fheabhas luachanna agus próiseas.

Cruthaíodh an straitéis uaillmhianach a dtugtar breac-chuntas sa doiciméid seo uirthi ar mhaithe leis an bhforbairt agus leis an bhfairsingiú, agus na cláir sin a bhfuil éileamh orthu go hinmheánach á gcaomhnú. I measc na n-aidhmeanna físiúla a leagtar amach sa doiciméid seo tá tógáil ionad idirnáisiúnta agus amharclann don phíobaireacht uilleann ag 16 Sráid Henrietta. Creidimid go mbeidh an straitéis seo spreagúil agus sochreidte dár mbaill, dár bhfoireann, don Bhord, agus dár bpáirtithe leasmhaire sna trí bliana atá amach romhainn.

Lean cruthú na straitéise seo próiseas dian a chuimsigh suirbhéanna ballraíochta agus ceardlanna éascaithe agus, mar thoradh air sin, creidimid go dtagann sé leis na spriocanna coiteann a roinnimid le réimse leathan páirtithe leasmhaire.

Ag caint di ar fhógra an lae inniu, dúirt an tAire Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán, Catherine Martine TD:

‘Cuireann sé an-áthas orm seoladh Sharing the Sound of Ireland, straitéis chuimsitheach nua NPU do na blianta 2022 – 2024, a fhógairt. D’éirigh leis Na Píobairí Uilleann traidisiún ceoil atá uathúil agus buan ar an oileán seo a chaomhnú. Tá an traidisiún caomhnaithe ag Na Píobairí Uilleann, tá beocht curtha lenár gcultúr acu, agus tá todhchaí na bPíob Uilleann deimhnithe acu. Is éard atá sa straitéis seo ná sraith ghníomhaíochtaí pleanáilte agus comhcheangailte a thabharfaidh tacaíocht d’fhorbairt agus do chruthaitheacht na Píobaireachta sa bhaile agus ar fud an domhain.

Dúirt príomhfheidhmeannach NPU, an píobaire Gay McKeon an méid seo, leis:

‘Bhí fís shoiléir ag bunaitheoirí Na bPíobairí Uilleann, ar phíobairí iad féin, don eagraíocht siar sa bhliain 1968 nuair nach raibh todhchaí na huirlise cinnte. Cuireann an fhís sin, atá bunaithe ar chur chun cinn na píobaireachta, na bpíob agus an cheoil thraidisiúnta trí theagasc agus trí chaomhnú, taca faoin straitéis nua seo, a chuireann na haidhmeanna bunúsacha sin in oiriúint don fhichiú haois agus d’ardán domhanda NPU. Táimid an-bhuíoch as an tacaíocht leanúnach airgeadais ón gComhairle Ealaíon agus ón Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán, a chuir leis an mborradh ollmhór atá tagtha faoi sheinm agus faoi dhéantús na bpíob uilleann, ar gnéithe uathúla agus íocónacha dár n-oidhreacht shaibhir chultúrtha iad.

Eolas faoi Na Píobairí Uilleann

Bunaíodh Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU) in 1968 ag an am a cheaptar nach raibh ach thar ar 100 píobaire uilleann fágtha sa tír. Ach is eagraíocht atá faoi bhláth inniu í agus é mar aidhm aici Fuaim na hÉireann a Roinnt trí Rochtain, trí Oideachas, trí Thaibhiú agus trí Chaomhnú.

Ón am ar oscail NPU a áitreabh i dteach Seoirseach athchóirithe i 15 Sráid Henrietta, Baile Átha Cliath in 2007 tá sé ag freastal ar an éileamh atá ag fás gan stad ar oiliúint rialta ar an uirlis. Tá sé ag foilsiú agus ag eisiúint taifeadtaí tábhachtacha ó shin i leith freisin. Toisc go bhfuil éileamh thar na bearta ar an uirlis í fhéin, bhunaigh NPU a sainionad oiliúna PipeCraft in 2011 chun oiliúint a chur ar fáil ins an saincheird ardoilte de dhéantús píbe.

Tá NPU creidiúnaithe le hEagraíocht Oideachais, Eolaíochta agus Chultúir na Náisiún Aontaithe (UNESCO) mar eagraíocht neamhrialtasach inniúil (NGO) in san earnáil a bhaineann le hOidhreacht Chultúir Dholáimhsithe (ICH).

Chuaigh NPU i mbun stocaireachta le Rialtas na hÉireann chun go ndaingneodh sé Coinbhinsiún UNESCO maidir le hOidhreacht Chultúir Dholáimhsithe. De thoradh ar sin chuir UNESCO Píobaireacht Uilleann ar a Liosta Ionadaíoch d’Oidhreacht Chultúir Dholáimhsithe an Chine Daonna i Nollaig 2017.

I 2021, bronnadh Gradam Cré-Umha do héagsúlacht ar NPU ó Ionad Éireannach na Éagsúlachta.

Is iad príomh-mhaoinitheoirí NPU ná An Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán, An Chomhairle Ealaíon agus Comhairle Cathrach Bhaile Átha Cliath.
