One-week course on making a concert pitch chanter to take place at Na Píobairí Uilleann’s PipeCraft Training Centre. Monday 10th April through Friday 14th April 2023, five days inclusive, 9:30am – 4:30pm each day.

Each student will be guided through the process of making a concert pitch chanter (D), by pipe maker Éamonn Curran. Students will learn the skills involved in producing such a chanter, and will get to take home the chanter they have made by the end of the week.

Cost for the course is €380 for members / €500 for non-members. (Membership can be purchased on the Na Píobairí Uilleann website).

Piping workshops are being organised in Wicklow on a quarterly basis. The first workshop will be held on the 18th June 2022 with Gay McKeon as visiting guest tutor, and Éanna Drury taking the second class. The workshops are to be held on the following dates in Gaelscoil na gCloch Liath, Greystones:

Classes run from 10am-1pm. There will be an advanced and intermediate class, subject to demand. The tutors will perform as part of a short recital, after the classes conclude.

Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event 2022

The Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event takes place annually in Henrietta Street on the first Saturday in December. The events of the day celebrate all aspects of Breandán’s legacy and include piping tuition, reedmaking tuition, a lecture and piping performance, followed by a social gathering with informal music.

Course on making uilleann pipes bags to take place at Na Píobairí Uilleann’s PipeCraft Training Centre. Saturday-Sunday 26-27th November 2022, 10am-4pm.

Each student will be guided through the process of making a hand-stitched bag for uilleann pipes by Daniela Ferretti. Daniela has a wealth of experience making hand-sewn and riveted bags for the last 12 years . She will share her knowledge on how to choose the right leather, how to produce an air tight bag from beginning to end, and how to solve the most common problems occurring when working with a natural material like leather. Participants will leave the course with their own finished bag (or given clear instructions on how to complete it, if under time constraints).

All tools and materials will be provided.

Cost for the course is €100 for members / €140 for non-members. (Membership can be purchased on the Na Píobairí Uilleann website).

Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event 2021

The Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event takes place annually in Henrietta Street on the first Saturday in December. The event celebrates the life and achievements of Breandán Breathnach. Breandán Breathnach was one of the most significant figures in uilleann piping in the twentieth century, as a piper, organizer, researcher and collector. The events of the day celebrate all aspects of Breandán’s legacy and include piping tuition, reedmaking tuition, a lecture and piping performance, followed by a social gathering with informal music.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday 4th December 2021 and will honour the contribution of piper, reedmaker, pipemaker, and teacher Dan O’Dowd. Dan was a close friend of Breandán’s. The event will include classes in uilleann piping with Eugene Lambe and Donncha Keegan. There will also be a reedmaking workshop with Cillian Ó Briain. The evening’s activities will feature an open discussion “Memories of Dan O’Dowd”, which will be hosted by broadcaster Peter Browne and which will include a contribution from Dan’s granddaughter Deirdre Leech. It will provide an opportunity for some of Dan’s many friends and students to share their recollections of Dan. The formal events of the day will finish with a solo piping recital featuring three performers: John O’Brien, Noel Pocock, and Nollaig Mac Cárthaigh.

*In line with Government restrictions, all events will be limited capacity and all attendees will be required to provide a Covid 19 Cert (being fully vaccinated or recovered from COVID-19 within the previous 6 months) and a valid photo ID.

Two day course on key making to take place at Na Píobairí Uilleann’s PipeCraft Training Centre. Saturday 24th until Sunday 25th July 2021, two days inclusive, 9.30am – 4.30pm each day.

Each student will be guided through the process of making a chanter key, by pipe maker and flute maker Aaron O’Hagan. Students will learn the skills involved in producing various shapes for both chanter and regulator keys, and how to fit them satisfactorily. Students will also get to take home the key they have made at the end of the course.

Cost for the course is €100 for members / €130 for non-members. (Membership can be purchase from €30 on the Na Píobairí Uilleann website).

Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy 2021 – (online)

Due to the continuing restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, all summer school events and activities will be online for 2021.

Tuition, consisting of one and a half hours per day, will commence on Monday 5th July and conclude on Friday 9th July. Piping tuition will take place via Zoom and the fee is €60 for the week. Na Píobairí Uilleann will present a short piping recital each afternoon and a major recital on the evening of Wednesday 7th (fee €10).

Class Times (All times listed are Irish Standard Time):

  • Uilleann piping classes will take place daily from 10.00am-11.30pm and 3.00pm-4.30pm. Each student will be placed in one slot according to their level and will be informed two weeks in advance with the time of their piping class
  • Intermediate Reedmaking classes will take place daily at 10.00am-11.30am 
  • Elementary Reedmaking classes will take place daily at 3.00pm-4.30pm 
  • Regulator classes will take place daily at 3.00pm-4.30pm 
  • Air classes will take place daily at 5.00pm-6.30pm (This class is free of charge and open to all. To register, please email info@pipers.ie)

Registration details:

  • N.B. Only one ticket needs to be purchased per student. You cannot attend piping classes both in the morning and afternoon.
  • All class allocations will be made by Na Píobairí Uilleann. You will be sent a short questionnaire upon registration to fill in for allocation purposes.
  • Each student will receive details of their class along with the relevant zoom link two weeks in advance.

We ask that all students ensure their pipes and regulators are in working condition in advance of the classes. 

All students under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult during the online class. For students under 18, a Parental/Guardian Consent Form must be completed online in advance of the classes beginning.
