New NPU Publication: Music for the Irish Pipes: Vol. IV by Joe Doyle

Music for the Irish Pipes Volume Four is the latest collection of tunes transcribed by Joe Doyle, published by Na Píobairí Uilleann. Joe draws on years of dedicated listening and playing to transcribe the music of these pipers. This new volume contains 231 tunes from six master pipers of the twentieth century.

The collection features music from Johnny Doran, Tommy Kearney, Tommy Reck, Sean McAloon, Seán Seery and Jimmy Dolan. The tunes have been transcribed from a variety of sources: commercial and archive discs, field recordings, home-made reel-to-reels, and cassettes. The music spans a period of seventy years, from the 1940s to the early 2000s.

The piping performances featured in this book demonstrate a great variety of stylistic approaches to playing the Irish pipes. The music spans a period of seventy years, from the 1940s to the early 2000s.

The music is transcribed in staff notation and also in ABC shorthand that facilitates learners who cannot read staff notation. A defined set of conventions to denote piping techniques are used for all tunes. Each transcription features a basic setting of the tune and is followed by variations played during the performance. All the transcriptions have been set in Sibelius by Tim Doyle, short biographies of each piper by Emmett Gill are included and the foreword is by Nollaig Mac Cárthaigh.

The collection is available for purchase from the NPU shop.
