Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event 2022

The Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event takes place annually in Henrietta Street on the first Saturday in December. The event celebrates the life and achievements of Breandán Breathnach. Breandán Breathnach was one of the most significant figures in uilleann piping in the twentieth century, as a piper, organizer, researcher and collector. The events of the day celebrate all aspects of Breandán’s legacy and include piping tuition, reedmaking tuition, a lecture and piping performance, followed by a social gathering with informal music.

International Uilleann Piping Day (IUPD) 2022

International Uilleann Piping Day, a global celebration of the unique Irish pipes or ‘uilleann pipes’, will take place around the world on Saturday 5th November 2022.

This co-ordinated day of piping activity organised by Na Píobairí Uilleann, is aimed at raising awareness of this iconic Irish instrument. Events will be held online or in person.

As in previous years, piping recitals, exhibitions, on-line broadcasts and discussions explaining the instrument and how it is made will take place across different time zones and those interested in learning more about the uilleann pipes can attend an activity in your locality or tune into online activities through the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/uilleannpipingday set up specifically for this event. Anyone interested in getting involved or hosting an event should email info@pipers.ie.

The Rowsome Commemorative Event 2022

The Leo Rowsome Commemorative Event takes place annually in Henrietta Street on the final Saturday in February. The event celebrates the life and achievements of Leo Rowsome. Leo Rowsome was one of the most significant figures in uilleann piping in the twentieth century, as a piper, pipemaker, organiser and piping teacher. The events of the day reflect all aspects of Leo’s piping legacy and include piping tuition, pipemaking and reedmaking tuition, a lecture and piping performance, followed by a social gathering with informal music.

‘Session with the Pipers’ will take place in person at The Cobblestone on Tuesday 1st February at 9:30pm, doors open at 9pm.

This month’s line-up features:

In Person Classes Spring Term 2022

We are delighted to be returning to in person classes in Henrietta St. on Tuesday 11th January 2022. Classes will run for 13 weeks and cost €130 for the term. Uilleann piping classes will take place at 6pm, 7pm and 9pm while the reedmaking class will take place from 6:30pm – 8pm.

The term will run until Tuesday 12th April with a break for the mid-term on Tuesday 22nd February.

Students are reminded that to attend classes you must have an up to date membership of Na Píobairí Uilleann. For more information in relation to our membership, click here.

Na Píobairí Uilleann’s popular monthly recital series, the Session with the Pipers has gone on the road! We have been delighted to present a number of pre-recorded episodes filmed all around the country in 2021, finishing with two upcoming editions from Stiúideo Cuan in An Spidéal, Co.Galway.

The edition on Saturday 1st January 2022 (New Year’s Day in Ireland) will feature:

  • Cormac Cannon (pipes)
  • Sarah Ghriallais (song)
  • Ronan O’Flaherty & Damien O’Reilly (fiddle & accordion)
  • Éamonn Ó Bróithe (song)

All episodes will be available to view for one month, free to all on NPU-TV. Donations are however welcome. Stay tuned for great music and song!

The Leo Rowsome Commemorative Event takes place annually in Henrietta Street [on the final Saturday in February]. The event celebrates the life and achievements of Leo Rowsome. Leo Rowsome was one of the most significant figures in uilleann piping in the twentieth century, as a piper, pipemaker, organiser and piping teacher. The events of the day reflect all aspects of Leo’s piping legacy and include piping tuition, pipemaking and reedmaking tuition, a lecture and piping performance, followed by a social gathering with informal music.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday 20th November 2021. The event will include classes in uilleann piping with Muireann Ní Shé and the advanced piping class with Michael ‘Blackie’ O’Connell will have a focus on regulator playing. There will be classes in reedmaking with Patrick O’Hare and a pipes maintenance workshop with Donnacha Dwyer. The evening’s activities will include a lecture by Harry Bradshaw, “Bill Stapleton and the Irish Recording Company”. The evening will also see the launch of Taisce Luachmhar (Valuable Treasure) – The Piping Album, a CD featuring recordings by Leo Rowsome (solo) and the Rowsome Quartet.

The formal events of the day will finish with a piping recital featuring three solo performers, Sinéad Ní Allmhuráin, Ciarán Browne and Pádraic Keane who all have family piping connections to Leo Rowsome.
