New Reedmaking Videos with Donnacha Dwyer, Finbar Furey & Dave Hegarty
0
, , ,

In early 2022, NPU filmed a series of reedmaking videos with expert reedmakers Donnacha Dwyer, Finbar Furey and Dave Hegarty.

The videos featured detailed demonstrations from each reedmaker of their personal approach to making concert pitch chanter reeds.

The series was filmed by uilleann piper and film maker Maitiú Ó Casaide with assistance from piper and reedmaker, Ultan Mac Gabhann.

Donnacha and Finbar were filmed in NPU’s building in Henrietta Street, Dublin and Dave was filmed at his home in Tralee, Co. Kerry.

We hope that this series of reedmaking videos will be of interest to reedmakers of all levels, pipers and anyone with an interest in the art of uilleann piping and crafts in Ireland.

This series was made possible through support from the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland, Network Support Scheme 2021. Special thanks are due to the participating reedmakers Donnacha, Finbar and Dave for readily sharing their knowledge and experience.

The videos are available to all view on the website. As with all content on our website, no log-in or subscription are required to view the material:

Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event 2021

The Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event takes place annually in Henrietta Street on the first Saturday in December. The event celebrates the life and achievements of Breandán Breathnach. Breandán Breathnach was one of the most significant figures in uilleann piping in the twentieth century, as a piper, organizer, researcher and collector. The events of the day celebrate all aspects of Breandán’s legacy and include piping tuition, reedmaking tuition, a lecture and piping performance, followed by a social gathering with informal music.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday 4th December 2021 and will honour the contribution of piper, reedmaker, pipemaker, and teacher Dan O’Dowd. Dan was a close friend of Breandán’s. The event will include classes in uilleann piping with Eugene Lambe and Donncha Keegan. There will also be a reedmaking workshop with Cillian Ó Briain. The evening’s activities will feature an open discussion “Memories of Dan O’Dowd”, which will be hosted by broadcaster Peter Browne and which will include a contribution from Dan’s granddaughter Deirdre Leech. It will provide an opportunity for some of Dan’s many friends and students to share their recollections of Dan. The formal events of the day will finish with a solo piping recital featuring three performers: John O’Brien, Noel Pocock, and Nollaig Mac Cárthaigh.

*In line with Government restrictions, all events will be limited capacity and all attendees will be required to provide a Covid 19 Cert (being fully vaccinated or recovered from COVID-19 within the previous 6 months) and a valid photo ID.
