PipeCraft Course: Reedmaking with Éamonn Curran

Reedmaking upskilling with Co. Monaghan piper, pipemaker, and reedmaker Éamonn Curran. Éamonn has a wealth of experience maintaining and reeding sets at the Armagh Pipers’ Club. He also has a professional background in education, and has taught a number of reedmaking workshops for Na Píobairí Uilleann.

All tools and materials will be provided at PipeCraft, but participants are encouraged to bring their own tools along with them. Participants must be 16 and over.

Date: Monday 15th August – Wednesday 17th August 2022 (3 day course).

Location: PipeCraft, Unit 44, Port Tunnel Business Park, Clonshaugh, Dublin 17.

Cost: €75 per person (members)
€105 per person (non-members)

Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy 2021 – (online)

Due to the continuing restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, all summer school events and activities will be online for 2021.

Tuition, consisting of one and a half hours per day, will commence on Monday 5th July and conclude on Friday 9th July. Piping tuition will take place via Zoom and the fee is €60 for the week. Na Píobairí Uilleann will present a short piping recital each afternoon and a major recital on the evening of Wednesday 7th (fee €10).

Class Times (All times listed are Irish Standard Time):

  • Uilleann piping classes will take place daily from 10.00am-11.30pm and 3.00pm-4.30pm. Each student will be placed in one slot according to their level and will be informed two weeks in advance with the time of their piping class
  • Intermediate Reedmaking classes will take place daily at 10.00am-11.30am 
  • Elementary Reedmaking classes will take place daily at 3.00pm-4.30pm 
  • Regulator classes will take place daily at 3.00pm-4.30pm 
  • Air classes will take place daily at 5.00pm-6.30pm (This class is free of charge and open to all. To register, please email info@pipers.ie)

Registration details:

  • N.B. Only one ticket needs to be purchased per student. You cannot attend piping classes both in the morning and afternoon.
  • All class allocations will be made by Na Píobairí Uilleann. You will be sent a short questionnaire upon registration to fill in for allocation purposes.
  • Each student will receive details of their class along with the relevant zoom link two weeks in advance.

We ask that all students ensure their pipes and regulators are in working condition in advance of the classes. 

All students under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult during the online class. For students under 18, a Parental/Guardian Consent Form must be completed online in advance of the classes beginning.

Online Pipes Maintenance Workshop with Jim Wenham

This course is now full, but we do plan on hosting another online maintenance workshop very soon. If you would be interested in attending, please email info@pipers.ie.

Na Píobairí Uilleann are please to announce that we will be holding an online pipes maintenance course using Zoom video calling. The course will take place with well-known pipe maker Jim Wenham.

The workshop will comprise of practical demonstrations on how to solve various problems that participants may have encountered with their pipes, and give them the confidence to attempt some of this maintenance work themselves. Topics will include:

  • rehemping loose joints
  • repair and/or replacement of valves in both bag and bellows
  • tying a chanter stock into a bag
  • cutting a bag to tie-in a blow pipe
  • a systematic approach to leak detection and repair
  • replacement of key pads
  • cleaning of uilleann pipes

Participants should send, in advance, any queries, faults, or problems that they might like covered when they make their application for a place on the course. They should have their own pipes to hand when logging in to the workshop.

PipeCraft – Maintenance Class Monday 21st March.

The workshop will comprise of several hands on instruction sessions on how to solve various problems that participants may have encountered and which they would benefit learning how to deal with these issues for themselves, such as repair and/or replacement of valves in bellows, replacement of stocks in the bag, cleaning of their pipes a step by step approach etc.

Participants are required to bring their own set of pipes with them on the day and also to send any queries on faults or problems that they would like covered, when they make their application for a place on the course. Each persons query will be dealt with individually and all participants will experience and benefit from the tasks involved.  

The fee for participation is €40 and places are limited.
