This course will present acoustic theory from the specific perspective of uilleann pipes, with an emphasis on practical application to pipe making, reeding, design, and tuning. A minimum of mathematical formulae will be required. A selection of recommended readings from a readily available textbook will be supplied to students in advance of the class. At the end of the course, students will have new insights into how the physical characteristics of pipes come together to determine their sound, and new conceptual and practical techniques for tuning and design. Numerous myths, misunderstandings, and oversimplifications will be dispelled.
