An tAcadamh Ceoil Chaoimhín Uí Dhochartaigh /Traditional Music Academy

IT’S TIME FOR TRAD!!

Derry’s new Traditional Music Academy represents the legacy of the successful and historic Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann held in Derry in 2013, where traditional Irish music was shared and celebrated by 430,000 people from all communities and all backgrounds. The Academy is housed in the newly refurbished Manse at 35 Great James’ Street, part of the Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin complex and is operating in partnership with Ulster University.

The Academy will offer traditional music classes on a wide range of instruments  including tin-whistle, fiddle, flute, accordion, concertina, banjo, bodhrán, piano, guitar, harmonica, harp and uilleann pipes. Classes are delivered in small groups, organized according to ability; individual classes are also available. The tutors represent some of the best names in traditional music education from across Ireland; the uilleann pipes instruction is being delivered by staff of Dublin’s Na Píobáirí Uilleann while Janet Harbison, Director of the Irish Harp Centre and the Irish Harp Orchestra, will co-ordinate the harp classes.

Other classes available include ceili band and groups; these will be taught by Maggie Maguire, leader of the Knockmore Céilí Band, 2014 All-Ireland Champions. The Trad for Tots programme caters for younger age groups (3-6 years) and there are several classes  for adults (mornings and evenings). In addition, the Academy will host a monthly Folk on Friday youth session, lunchtime sessions with students from Ulster University, and workshops with visiting international artists.  There is also an instrument bank with a range of instruments available for students to hire.

Director Liz Doherty says, “this is such an exciting time for traditional music in Derry and the north-west. To have a dedicated building for traditional music teaching, to have world class tutors coming on board, and to have some of the top national organisations such as Na Píobairí Uilleann and the Irish Harp Centre partnering with us … it really is an amazing opportunity. If ever there was a time to take up traditional music, this is it!”
