Píobaire, An 7 1 4 20110224 4 M ARGARET MCMAHON, widow of the late Tom McMahon of Galway and Chicago, has donated two sets of pipes owned by her late husband, as well as tape-recordings of musi- cians made in the US, Ireland and England. Also included in the donation was a set of hand-tools once used by pipe-maker Pat Hennelly. We are very grateful to Mrs. McMahon and her daugh- ters Eileen and Colleen for this wonderful gift, and to Pat O’Connor and Tom Maree for facili- tating the arrangements and delivery. Pat Mitchell has donated a selection of 78rpm recordings to our archive. These include a recording (Victor 18727) with, on side B, Patsy Touhey with the reels “Steam Packet”, “Morn- ing Star” and “Miss McCloud”. Brian Harten of Louth Co. Council has do- nated a set of traditional music CDs. ~ DONATIONS & ACQUISITIONS ~ Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to ex- change publications. Our thanks are due to all of the piping groups working around the world. Making their re- gional and local piping events happen, is really helping the learner to develop piping skills and improving the music throughout 2011. Piping thrives in good social gatherings, where learn- ing tunes, techniques and maintenance skills can take place. Our very best wishes to all those organising their own piping initiatives. Supporting agencies As NPU continues to make good progress, may I gratefully acknowledge the support of the Music Network for funding towards the acqui- sition of money through the Music Capital Scheme. This assistance now allows us to ac- quire in excess of 20 practice sets for the pipes on loan scheme. All of us who in times past, had a long waiting time for pipes in order to get started, greatly value this financial help. May I on behalf of all members record our sin- cere thanks to the Dept. of Tourism, Culture and Sport, the Arts Council and the Crafts Council of Ireland. These bodies have given us such important and timely financial support for our pipe-making training initiatives. Such help allows us to redouble our efforts on behalf of learner pipers and the wider traditional music community. Thanks to members and staff. As renewals of membership are coming in, may I on behalf of the Board, express our grat- itude to all pipers and friends who maintain their membership supporting NPU’s develop- ment programme financially. This is essential to help maintain and improve services to mem- bers. Dave Hegarty Chairman
