Píobaire, An 9 4 28 20130930 28 Sean Stewart Angel piper L IAM MCNULTY has passed this picture on to us, taken by his friend Sean Stewart in St. Clement’s Church in Outwell, Cambridgeshire. Sean writes that “Here’s my latest bagpiper find I promised to send. from my trip down to Norfolk. I’m pretty impressed as it was rather dark but that’s the beauty of tripods and long exposures!!!! What’s even more interesting is that there are 4 or 5 angels missing, so it could have easily have been this one and then we’d have been none the wiser! A bit of visible dam- age is blatantly obvious but I’m intrigued with the size of the woodworm/beetle infestation. The angels adorn the hammerbeam roof and wall plates, with most being depicted as hold- ing the instruments of the passion, but with the odd harpist and other musical instrument thrown in for good measure. There is a heavy Flemish influence in the vil- lage whose fens and waterways were drained and created by Dutch engineers. It’s obvious form the carving that these are certainly not itinerant local bagpipes!” ~ Seanchas ~ PROF. TUOHEY’S BAGPIPES STOLEN Historical combination that won Distinction on the “Midway Plaisance” V ISITORS TO THE MIDWAY PLAISANCE, who profoundly admired the technique of Prof. J. P. Tuohey, the bagpipe player at the Irish Vil- lage, will be grieved to learn the professor was in some unknown manner relieved of his pipes while on his way home from a bag recital early Sunday morning. The set of bagpipes, the more or less dulcet tones of which caused a thrill of satisfaction that things were no worse to per- vade the breasts of thousands of Midway visi- tors, were manufactured at a cost of $300 ex- pressly for Mr. Tuohey, and his ardent affection for them was demonstrated by the hugging he gave them continuously during the World’s Fair. The police will spare no efforts to locate the pipes before they fall into the hands of some conscienceless amateur. Detective Raf- ferty has a full description of the bags and pipes, but so far is without a clew [sic] to their whereabouts. (Chicago Daily Chronicle, 16 Oct. 1894)
