Píobaire, An 9 4 27 20130930 I WAS HAVING a quick thumb through An Pi- obaire vol 9 no 2 when I arrived home ear- lier and saw the photo of the yew chanter near the back. I have recently returned a set of pipes to a friend of mine Tony Russell, the chanter of which looks surprisingly similar to the one in the photo. The set consists of bag; bellows; chanter; common stock with three drones & 2 regulators. Each of the drones has an ivory/bone stopper attached to the tube with a length of string/waxed hemp. Tony commented “I have looked closely at the name on the chanter and it is an understatement to say it’s not clear! However, from the marks that can be made out it looks like “I I O S S” where the first letter is worn out but could be “R”. This is above a longer set of letters where the upper parts are more worn but looks like “* ubLI I I”. Again, trying to fit a name into the parts left visible it really does seem to be “DUBLIN”. Seemingly the pipes belonged to Forster Charl- ton the Northumberland piper (1916–89), who was friend and associate of the current owner Tony Russell-Davis. I had the pipes because I wanted a challenge for my inadequate reed making skills and managed to create something that produced a poor sound- ing 2 octaves in D – the chanter is narrow bore.
