Píobaire, An 9 4 4 20130930 4 D AVID BRADFIELD has donated a pictorial work on the bagpipes in Germany entitled Sack- pfeifen in Schwaben (Ernst E. Schmidt, 1997). Ger- man libraries and archives were searched for the illustrations for this work, and these include the pic- ture a detail of which is shown at right. It appears to depict a German court masque or pageant which in- cluded the appearance of an Irish military unit, de- scribed, in the usage of the time, as ‘Scots’. Although the instrument depicted seems quite un- realistic, the fact that a bagpipe is included in the scene would suggest that, at least at that time and place, the instrument was associated with the Irish. We are trying to obtain fuller details of the picture and its source, and these will be published in due course. Brooks Academy, our set-dancing friends based in Henrietta Street, have acquired at auction a set of 19th c. music collections including two bound vol- umes of quadrilles and other popular music, and two volumes of manuscript music. Along with the rest of Brooks’ library of dance-related material, these can be consulted in our library at NPU. Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to exchange pub- lications, and we also subscribe to relevant periodicals. Complete or near-complete runs of many of these publi- cations are available to members in our library. Publica- tions recently received include the following: Pipers’ Review / Iris na bPíobairí – Magazine of the Irish Pipers’ Club, Seattle.
