Píobaire, An 9 3 28 20130712 28 self-oiling properties (and yes, I could be seriously mistaken on this). With the number of pipemak- ers–Northumbrian and Irish pipe makers using it because of its “availability” (i.e. liberation) it’s a wonder that any was left for industrial use. Amongst the local musicians in the area was John Doonan, a flute and piccolo player who was a renowned player for Irish dancers in Feiseanna. John had always desired to play the pipes and though he didn’t manage, his son Michael did get a half set from Ken. His youngest son Kevin wisely played the fiddle. Ken’s output wasn’t prodigious but he certainly made pipes that sounded very good even if the de- sign was not always exactly in the Rowsome or Kenna mould. I had heard that Paddy Moloney visited him at one stage with a view to Ken mak- ing him some. He also made a clarsach and a model of “The Flying Scotsman”, indeed there wasn’t much he couldn’t turn his hand to. As one of Ken’s friends remarked, he was never going to appear on the front cover of Vogue, and he told of the time when his wife Pat told him to go and put on a clean jersey, he went upstairs and turned it inside out. For all that he was a kindly and interesting man who was always glad to help out a friend. He worked in recent years as a school caretaker and lived modestly in a small council house with Pat his wife and daughter Alison and his son Duncan. He enjoyed the pipes and Liam O’Flynn playing “The Brendan Voyage” in par- ticular. Indeed this was the music that was played at his cremation. He will be much missed in these parts for his good company and gentle wit as much as his piping.
