I had to acquire them…] A reasonable substitute in today’s world would be to absorb carefully selected recordings and hope for success similar to the Suzuki school of music based on the same approach But what of the music on the CDs? Willie Clancy’s playing, especially on “The Boy in the Gap” seems a little hesitant at first – possi- bly due to the unfamiliar set of pipes – but it settles down and we are treated to a feast of the Clancy ‘specials’: the off-the-knee slurs, his unique rhythm on the long rolls, his ‘piper’s C’, and of course the variations of rhythm, or- nament and melody. A transcription of “The Bold Trainer O” appeared in Ceol II.3 as did “Fraher’s”, a tune which Willie held in high re- gard as much for its pedigree as its melody. Pedigree (or call it tradition) was important to Willie Clancy and he had a special regard for tunes of the great Clare piper Garrett Barry such as “Garraí na Saileog” which came to him via his father Gilbert, a friend of Barry’s. Jimmy Ward used whistle the tune named for him – maybe that’s why Willie chose to play it on the tin whistle. And he couldn’t resist
