Píobaire, An 9 3 8 20130712 8 Gerry Lyons I N SEPTEMBER 2012, with the support of the Dublin City Council Arts Office, Na Píobairí Uilleann commenced a pilot pro- gramme with secondary students at Drimnagh Castle Secondary and with primary students at Scoil Mhuire Marino. We are pleased to report that the students have made excel- lent progress in learning the pipes during the year, to the point where seven students at Scoil Mhuire Marino played at the school’s end of term concert on Thursday 30th May last. Accompanied by Donnacha Dwyer, who has been teaching the pipes at both schools every week since the project began, fifth class boys James Whitaker, Daragh McKenna, Tadhg Murphy and James Heery played “The Eagle’s Whistle” followed by Éanna Foley, Conor O’Brien and Simon Gollogley who played the three-part version of the slip jig “The Butter- fly”. Piping Outreach Programme This revives a tradition at the school, as can be seen from the photo at right of the school band from 1952 which features uilleann pipers, Leon Rowsome (front row, first from left), Paddy Moloney (front row, second from right) and Hugh Byrne (front row, at right) The 1952 photo also features fiddle players Liam Rowsome (third row, third left) and John Shee- han (back row, third from right) and also, seated in the front row, the conductor Proinnsías Ó Duinn (second from left) The students will continue to learn with Don- nacha next year and Na Píobairí Uilleann also plan to expand the programme with the girls at Assumption Secondary School, Walkinstown. Our thanks to Donnacha and to Ben Dorney (Principal) and Ciara Stapleton at Scoil Mhuire and to Dominic Price at Driminagh Castle for getting the students involved, and to Dublin City Council Arts Office for their continued support for the project.
