9 2 20 20130417 16 ~ From the Archive ~ TWO WALTZES FROM WILLIE ROWSOME I T WOULD BE GREAT to be able to travel back before the era of recording machines to hear how and what the famous pipers of the past played. Family tradition however can some- times make up for the lack of suitable equip- ment, and that’s the case with the tunes presented here. Hugh Quinn, a student of Leo Rowsome, re- cently gave us a copy of a music sheet that had been written for him by Leo. It consists of two ‘German Waltzes’ that Leo had learned from his father the piper and pipemaker Willie Row- some. While we tend these days to think of the pipes as an instrument solely for Irish traditional music, it was not always so.
