Píobaire, An 9 2 10 20130417 REELS ON WHEELS T HE ANNUAL NA PÍOBAIRÍ UILLEANN spon- sored cycle from Dublin to Milltown Mal- bay for the Willie Clancy Summer School is on the horizon again and we are inviting you to take on the challenge by either joining us on this exciting trip or sponsoring a cyclist. The 260km journey sets off from Lucan, Co. Dublin on Friday morning July 5, 2013 and lands in Miltown on the Saturday evening with an overnight stopover in Birr, Co. Offaly. The chosen route is primarily flat with some beau- tiful countryside to enjoy on the way. This is now the fourth year of the event since it was re-introduced in 2010 and it is a won- derful opportunity to enjoy the company of fel- low musicians and music enthusiasts, accomplish a decent physical challenge while contributing to a worthy cause. Aimed at cyclists of all abilities, the cycle is punctuated by a night of music, plenty of sport and provides NPU not only with a great oppor- tunity to generate much needed funding, but also to raise awareness for the organisation, in particular for our new building No. 16, which will house a theatre, museum and pipemaking training centre. We raised €30,000 over the past three years which has helped deliver much needed training in uilleann pipe making at our PipeCraft training centre in Clonshaugh. The only requirements for participating in the cycle is that you are over 18, fit enough to cycle 130 km in one day (at your own pace), have a bike, a helmet and raise the initial de- posit of €150 which covers the cost of your bed and breakfast and one evening meal. For wheelers who are more experienced and fancy a decent spin, there are ample opportunities on the way - the cycle is split into two groups for part of the journey with the proviso that no one is left to cycle on their own. Safety is obviously para- mount and the cycle is marshalled by experi- enced cyclists while lead and rear cars provide es- sential back up to the par- ticipants while also carrying your gear and in- struments. A trained first aid specialist will be part of the support team. Wear- ing a helmet is compul- sory. A backup support vehicle will accompany the cycle to assist and to ensure that the group stays together. There will be food and rest stops and the reaction of those who participated over the past three years has been overwhelmingly positive with most return- ing again this year. ~ SPONSORED CYCLE ~ Get involved – we need your support!
