Píobaire, An 8 5 14 20121206 14 INTERNATIONAL UILLEANN PIPING DAY I UPD 2012 took place this year on October 20th. Given the initial success of 2011, the focus this year was two-fold: to extend events geograph- ically and see if we could also build on the interac- tivity of the events taking place. We achieved the first goal in that, while we ‘lost’ a small number of the groups/organisers from last year, many of those active in 2011 got involved again, and we also added some additional countries – Japan, Malaysia, Aus- tralia, Denmark – for the first time. In all, events took place in 35 locations around the world. Once again these ranged from recitals and concerts to reed making and teaching, and took place in a range of venues – from public libraries/arts centres to coun- try markets to public houses! The other goal was to see if we could link up more of the events via NPU TV, so that as well as streaming events from NPU (both Henrietta Street and the PIPECRAFT Centre), we could include some of those happening in other locations, and thereby link events on the day. Thanks to great work by Gerry Lyons (ably assisted by Stefan Evans and Conor McMahon) we broadcast live streaming from Monaghan, Milltown Malbay, Galway and Southern California, on NPU TV. To give a flavour of what took place on the day and how organisers felt about their event here is some of the feedback we received: Faliq Auri, Kuala Lumpur: The event went well. It’s also the first event ever that was held here in Malaysia. The audiences learn something new about the Uilleann Pipes and also the music of Ireland . . . . I’m very delighted and happy to be part of the pro- gramme. Kathleen Cavanagh, Florida: There were about 20 people who attended the event at our local library, and four pipers took part in it. In the part of the country that I live in, the uilleann pipers are quite rare, and the pipes are seen as a “curious oddity”, and often when we play out in public people say “what is THAT?” Tommy Keane, Galway: We had a great night in The Crane. We had 11 pipers play – 9 solo, 1 in duet with fiddle and 1 in trio with fiddle & concertina. Daylin Lamonte, Singapore: The event took place in a small room in the 3rd floor of Molly Malone’s Irish pub, and the room was so crowded that we could barely walk through. The Irish ambassador also joined us for a while. Mogens Hundevad, Denmark: Eamon Hayes and myself had about 17 guests – almost all newcomers – mature and a few kids John Devine, St Alban’s: I gave an introduction to Pipes, piping and a brief History of Uilleann Piping presentation, to members of the public who turned up on the day. Joe Mulligan, Achill: Great night tonight in Ted’s with Scoil Acla as part of International Uilleann Piping Day
