Píobaire, An 8 4 11 20120927 ANCESTRAL IMPRINTS – Histories of Irish Traditional Music and Dance THÉRÈSE SMITH, EDITOR Cork University Press, ISBN 978-185918-492-9 Available from www.corkuniversitypress.com €39 Hbk I N THIS COLLECTION of 13 essays, the authors (all but two of them traditional musicians) tease out the various as- pects of the sometimes fraught interface between actual cul- tural creations and artefacts, and the reception history of such items, as well as the created narratives sometimes sub- sequently imposed upon them. There are essays dealing with 19th century manuscript col- lections, Ireland and the Irish Diaspora, Audio & Video Recording, and Song, with two essays framing the discus- sion in the terms of the current investigations of the subject. Of particular interest to NPU members would be Paul de Grae’s piece on ‘Captain O’Neill and the Americans’, and especially Jimmy O’Brien-Moran’s ar- ticle ‘Capturing Diversity Whilst Creating Canon – The Advent of Sound Recording in Irish Tra- ditional Music’, in which he argues that the early recordings had a formative effect, in terms of style, technique and repertoire, on the Irish piping canon. – Terry Moylan 11 OPEN THE DOOR FOR THREE RÉ A LTA Available from www..realtamusic.com R ÉALTA are a Belfast-based trio consisting of pipers Aaron O’Hagan and Conor Lamb, and singer Deirdre Galway who also plays the piano and guitar.
