Píobaire, An 8 4 4 20120927 4 T HE DANCER AND FLUTE-PLAYER MICHAEL FLATLEY has donated a full set of Leo Rowsome pipes to Na Píobairí Uilleann. He had acquired the set at auction in Britain some time ago. NPU is very grateful to Michael for this generous donation. Damian Woodings has provided a quantity of elm timber for our PIPECRAFT training centre, which will be used for bellows-making. Since the last issue, we have acquired several books of interest, by donation and by pur- chase. Caoimhín Mac Aoidh has donated a copy of his recent work From Dunkeld to Dunkineely, The Highlands and Strathspeys of Donegal, and the Irish Georgian Society has donated a copy of their publication Ballyfin – The Restoration of an Irish House and Demesne. ~ DONATIONS & ACQUISITIONS ~ Also acquired were Jeannie Campbell’s High- land Bagpipe Makers, which contains entries on Tadhg Crowley and William Andrews, and the collected edition (ten parts) of Seán Óg Ó Tuama’s rare song collection An Chóisir Cheoil. Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to exchange pub- lications. Complete or near-complete runs of many of these publications are available to members in our library. Publications recently received include the following: Chanter – Journal of the Bagpipe Soc., Autumn 2012 Piping Today – Magazine of the National Piping Cen- tre, Glasgow. Issues 58 & 59, 2012 Piping Times – Magazine of the College of Piping, Glasgow. Vol. 64, Nos. 10, 11 & 12 Newsletter of the Northumbrian Pipers’ Soc., Summer 2012 Treoir – Magazine of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Iml. 44 uimh. 2 English Dance & Song – Magazine of the English Folk Dance & Song Society, Autumn 2012 and Áine Uí Cheallaigh will sing a selection of songs from the Waterford gaelteacht. TEMPLEMORE, CO. TIPPERARY The 25th Annual Piping Tionól will be held from 12th to 14th October, and is always a great weekend for piping tuition and reedmak- ing. Thanks to Joe Barry and Brendan Collins, so many players have been inspired by enthu- siastic and skilled instruction and great music sessions. Séamus Mac Mathúna also has been doing stalwart work with reedmaking work- shops since the early days.. CHANTERS Ballybunion Chanters Festival 2012 takes place from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th Nov- ember in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. The week- end event will commemorate the life and music of Tom McCarthy, the famous profes- sional piper who died in 1903 and who was noted in his prime as a skilled professional player for North Kerry dancers. The weekend of piping and traditional singing will be a wel- come boost for piping in the region. PIPECRAFT CENTRE, CLONSHAUGH DUBLIN The full time course is continuing and a short course has recently been completed. Those in- terested in developing general pipe making or particular skills should check to see if there are any course places – even short courses – which might be of benefit. DEATHS We regret to announce the deaths of two stal- wart members. Anna Busby of New York, widow of our late patron Tom Busby, and Con Durham who was for many years based in Kerry. May they rest in peace. Dave Hegarty
