Píobaire, An 8 3 8 20120622 8 Photograph courtesy of Martin Leopold THE PIPER PIPES NO MORE O N MONDAY, the 21st of May 2012, we lost a great German piper, a unique per- sonality, longtime member of NPU, a founding member of the Deutsche Uilleann Pipes Gesellschaft and, last but definitively not least, a great piper, fellow and friend. Mario Emminger von Dohlen died after a short but hard fight against cancer at the age of 55, much too young. He left behind four children, his wife, his parents and Bernhard Emminger, his twin brother who supported him closely on his last six months staying with him until his last breath. Talking to many people at his Irish wake and fu- neral Mario was known for his kindness, his openness, his deep friendship, his rich music as piper, whistle and flute player, his expertise as master of woodwork and his deep love of Ireland. After Mario had received his first full set from Andreas Rogge in the early nineties he first ap- peared on the German Irish scene roughly around 1989, where the DUPG was founded. He often took part at those early tionóls, later his working and family life no longer allowed him to visit those events regularly. I personally first met Mario around 1995, meet- ing him on one of those sessions going on in our ~ Obituary ~ MARIO EMMINGER VON DOHLEN
