Píobaire, An 7 5 13 20111214 COMPANION TO IRISH TRADI- TIONAL MUSIC (2ND EDITION) FINTAN VALLELY, EDITOR (Cork University Press, ISBN 978 1 85918 4509) Available from www.companion.ie (€59.00) T HE SECOND EDITION of Fintan Vallely’s Com- panion to Irish Traditional Music was launched by Nicholas Carolan at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin in late November. Structured as an encyclopaedia, it covers the peo- ple, instruments, styles, repertoires and regions of past and present Irish Traditional music, song and dance. Half a million words and several hundred images present facts, ideas and terminology, ex- plore aesthetics and ideology, and document teach- ing, learning, study and performance. The immense volume of biography, history and opinion is diverse yet comprehensive. It is drawn from the collective expertise of some 200 special- ists who in A - Z format deal with all instruments and playing styles, repertoires, people, per- formance and transmission, media and professionalism, ideology, awards, standards and competition. V ISITORS TO HENRIETTA STREET are sometimes greeted by the sound of the pipes, as one staff member or another has occasion, for one reason or another, to take out and crank up the instrument. Our President Seán Potts called by recently with his wife Bernie and found our CEO Gay McKeon tweaking the tuning on a Leo Rowsome set. Members visiting Ireland can be assured of a welcome at Henrietta Street. 13 ~ GLAD YOU CALLED BY ~ Gay McKeon and Seán Potts Terry Moylan
