Píobaire, An 7 4 20 20110920 20 ALMOST from its foundation in 1782 the Highland Society of London arranged to have musicians performing at its regular dinners. The society maintained a po- sition of ‘Piper’ to the Society and whichever highland piper held that office would perform along with other highland pipers who may have been passing through London. The musi- cal performances were not limited to highland pipes, or even just Scots musicians, a Welsh harper appeared on several occasions. It is not therefore too surprising that a number of Union Pipers, John Murphy, James McDonnell and O’Farrell, when in London should also have been employed for these events. ~ Seanchas ~ THE HIGHLAND SOCIETY OF LONDON MEETINGS Hop Pickers GEI 56 Spenser’s Hornpipe GEI 77
