Píobaire, An 7 4 18 20110920 18 ~ From the Archive ~ GEMS FROM THE EMERALD ISLE AS PROMISED a few issues ago, the collection Gems from the Emerald Isle, published by Metzler & Co. in London in the mid 19th century, has been digitised and added to our IMCO web-page. See www.pipers.ie/IMCO/HGEI.HTM. This is a rare collection. No copies are to be found in the National Library of Ireland, Trinity College, The British Library or the Library of Congress, nor does a search on Google Books return any results. Over two thirds of the tunes are jigs of one kind or another, with 26 slip-jigs and 42 tunes in 6/8 or 12/8 time. It also includes several versions of tunes associated with Irish language songs – “If the cat had gold” and “Have you seen my Valentine” are versions of “Casadh an tSúgáin” and “An raibh tú ar an gCarraig?” respectively. A selection of items from this collection is pre- sented here: rarely heard tunes that could easily be accomodated in a modern repertoire. These tunes can be played online by using the SIBELIUS SCORCH plugin. In the original collection they all have bass lines suggestive of regulator accompa- niment. These have been omitted here. Jackson’s Cravat GEI 5 “Jackson’s Cassock” has here been given a key signature of G (originally C) to highlight the F nat- urals in the second part, and “The Irish Hunt” and “Hop Pickers” have been transposed to G from the original A. A PDF version of the collection can be downloaded from the web-page mentioned above, and a hard copy may be purchased from our online shop.
