Píobaire, An 7 3 13 20110711 13 N A PÍOBAIRÍ UILLEANN will be hold- ing a co-ordinated international day of uilleann piping activity on Satur- day, October 15, 2011 to promote the play- ing of the instrument and to raise awareness of our PIPECRAFT initiative aimed at strengthening the craft of uilleann pipemak- ing. As members will be aware, NPU has estab- lished a fully equipped pipe-making training centre in Clonshaugh, Dublin 17 where we have recently been delivering short training courses. We now need to acquire funding to deliver more extensive training for which there is a very large demand and are thus undertaking a series of fundraising activities in support of PIPECRAFT. The idea behind the co-ordinated activity day is that we would ask groups of pipers in various locations to organise a small event such as a recital in a local venue. Each event could involve some fundraising effort on some scale while the primary objective – to raise awareness of the uilleann pipes and our PIPECRAFT campaign – would be achieved by NPU promoting the event through media outlets internationally, nationally and lo- cally. It is our intention to encourage, assist and support activity in as many countries and lo- cations as possible. This will provide an ad- ditional opportunity for groups of pipers to raise awareness of their activities in their lo- cality and to have an enjoyable musical gathering hopefully on an annual basis. If you are interested in getting involved with other pipers in your locality or country, or if you have suggestions for this event, please notify Na Píobairí Uilleann by contacting Ken Lynam at nande@eircom.net and we will help co-ordinate the promotion of the event in your locality. So far this has proved a successful project, as it has resulted in some participants taking the next step of either buying their own pipes, or having them made. The 60th Tionól took place in Proitzer Mühle, Wendland, from June 23rd to 26th 2011. Teaching on that occasion were: Pipes advanced: Emmet Gill Pipes beginners: Bernd Klippert Reed making: Andreas Rogge Fiddle: Paul O'Shaughnessy Flute: Siobhán Kennedy Guitar (DADGAD): Jens Kommnick With the increasing growth in the club, the future of uilleann piping in Germany is looking good. More information on the German Uilleann Pipes Society can be found at www.dupg.net. The cur- rent DUPG president is Barbara Coerdt, whose right and left hand men come in the form of Rolf Wagels and Jens Kommnick. Our thanks to this trio for all their hard work, which has resulted in some great workshops and weekends of music. Long may it last!
