Píobaire, An 7 3 12 20110711 12 Siobhán Kennedy T HE DUPG (German Uilleann Pipes Soci- ety) held its 59th Tionól in Burg Fürste- neck which is situated in central Germany over the Easter weekend. The club was delighted to welcome Nollaig McCarthy as pipes teacher and Máire Breathnach who taught fiddle. Also teaching at the Tionól were Johannes Schiefner, who put the beginners pipers through their paces, Ekhart Topp who gave the guitar class, and of course, no DUPG gathering would be complete without Germany’s own pipes doctor Andreas Rogge, who taught reed making. The club is now 22 years in existence and has a membership of 180 (not all of them pipers, but all pipe-lovers). With the aim of making piping more accessible to new comers, the club now has three practice sets, which it loans out to perspec- tive pipers for a period of at least three months.
