Píobaire, An 7 3 8 20110711 8 SCHOLARSHIPS S CHOLARSHIPS for 2011 have been awarded by NPU to the following students. Piping schol- arships : Art Toibín (Galway), Peadar Giles (Gal- way), Saoirse Ní Machail (London), Luke O’Brien (Dublin) and Conal Duffy (Dundalk). The O’Mealy Pipe-making scholarship was awarded to Evan Kenepp of Pittsburgh. A piping scholarship to the WCSS has also been awarded by Clare FM to Turlough Ó Cinnéide. REED-MAKING COURSES T HIS year our training centre in Clonshaugh will be the venue for our summer reed- making and pipes-maintenance course. The courses will be week-long, and will take place on the weeks beginning July 25th and August 22nd, with Paddy O’Hare and Don- nacha Dwyer respectively giving the instruc- tion. Registration can be made through our website, or by email to info@pipers.ie. TIONÓL 2012 N EXT year’s Tionól will take place in Listowel, co. Kerry on the weekend of May 25-27. All activities will take place in the Listowel Arms Hotel. With 40 rooms, this establishment is bigger than the hotel used for this year’s tionól, so it should be able to accomodate all wishing to attend the event. The hotel is offering a package of two nights B+B and one evening meal for €125 per person shar- ing. We would encourage members to book early to avail of this offer. Bookings should be made through NPU. Contact info@pipers.ie BREATHNACH COMMEMORATION W E remember Breandán Breathnach each year with a day of activities devoted to piping, with a mixture of practical and academic events. This year’s event will take place on Sat- urday, December 3rd, and will include piping and reedmaking classes, a lecture and a recital. Please keep this date free to help make this a successful occasion. AUTUMN PIPING CLASSES R EGISTRATION for the term of piping classes be- ginning in September will take place on Tues- day 30 August, with the classes starting on 13 September. The fee for the term is €130.00 and at- tendance at the registration night is required to book a place. IMCO A further collection has been added to our Irish Music Collections Online (IMCO) website resource. This is John Macpherson Mulhollan’s Selection of Irish and Scots Tunes, Consisting of Airs, Marches, Strathspeys, &c., adapted for the Piano Forte, Violin and German Flute. This collection was published in Edinburgh in 1804 and contains 127 assorted Irish and Scot- tish airs and dance tunes. An interesting item included is the version of “Páidín Ó Raifeartaigh” which is reproduced here on pages 18-22. BE A PIPER IN A DAY A SPIRING PIPERS who missed the CELTIC CONNECTIONS festival which took place in Glastow recently will have missed the chance of a lifetime. At a public workshop in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on the 16th January patrons could avail of the workshop advertised as follows: This instrument has a reputation for being difficult to learn but in the skilled hands of Dave Shaw, piper and pipe maker from North Durham, you will find that you too can learn this sweet instrument in just one day.
