Píobaire, An 7 1 14 20110224 M EMBERS continue to spot and pass on to us interesting images of pipers and piping, and three of these, received over the past year or so, are reproduced here. Ronan Browne forwarded the picture at right, which he received from Peter Wallace of West- meath. It is a copy of a press clipping entitled “A Mullingar Piper” and sub-titled “Johnny Golden playing ‘The Rakes of Kildare’”. Thomas Westen spotted the piping pig (below) during a visit to Cardiff Castle in Wales, and Liam McNulty passed on the magnificent image of the piping donkey on page 15. This is a seventeenth-century inn-sign from a guest- house in the town of Weißenfels in Germany. Known over the years as both “The Golden Bagpipe” and “The Golden Donkey”, it was unfortunately demolished in 1979, and only the old inn-sign now survives, on show in a hotel near the location of the demolished building. See www.schuetzhaus-weissenfels.de/en/Weis- senfelser_Beziehungen.html for further infor- mation. The photograph was taken by Göran Janson. 14 ~ IMAGES ~ PIPING PICTURES FROM HERE & THERE
