THIS VOLUME consists of a reproduction in facsimile of the contents of James Brennan’s pipe-making workshop notes. Brennan worked with the Taylor Brothers and eventually took over their business. On Brennan’s death his notes passed through several hands and were finally saved by the editor from imminent disposal and destruction. As well as detailed drawings and sets of measurements, there are very interesting notes on piping technique and on Brennan’s piping contemporaries in America, the latter accompanied by several photographs of the pipers. MARTIN GALLEN’S reed-making manual is a valuable addition to the existing selction of tutors. It focuses exclusively on the method for making and trouble-shooting chanter reeds, and is lavishly illustrated with dozens of full-colour photographs.
