And of course to all who got involved in putting on an event – from Tokyo to Havana (and everywhere in between) – a huge vote of thanks. Finally, October 18th has been selected for IUPD 2014. We look forward to celebrating the day once again with pipers world-wide, both those who have been involved in the past three years, and the many others who we hope will participate next year. Ken Lynam, Niall Kelleher, Daniela Ferretti and Emmett Gill The concert was free but donations were ac- cepted. $130 was raised which will help fund the purchase of a “loaner” practice set of uilleann pipes, which the club will be able to offer to prospective pipers. Stormont As part of the organisation of the event, a tour of the building was offered in advance of the after- noon’s piping. This proved to be a most interest- ing and enjoyable experience for those who arrived by 2pm. At 3pm, Leslie Cree, MLA, welcomed pipers and their friends at an opening ceremony and he com- plimented the organiser of the event and the will- ingness to promote the uilleann pipes in the area. Pipers spanning three generations treated the au- dience to a feast of solo and duet piping. The sound of the pipes in the splendour of the Great Hall was a joy. The pillars were illuminated with blue lights – the colour of the logo of Na Píobairí Uilleann. The Visitors’ book revealed names from at least six counties. Havana No resulta raro que este 19 de octubre se cele- brase en Cuba el International Uilleann Piping Day, no una sino dos veces. Ambas presenta- ciones fueron organizadas por Espíritu Celta y apoyadas por proyectos amigos. La primera tuvo lugar en Los Jardines del Teatro Mella donde el proyecto cultural comunitario En clave de rumba tiene su sede. Allí el gaitero Alexander Suarez además de deleitar a los oyentes les hablo sobre la historia de la gaita irlandesa y de estructura pe- culiar. Temas muy emotivos que nos recordaron a ese gran maestro de maestros: Willie Clancy. El público, que mayoritariamente eran niños que aún no terminan la escuela primaria, permaneció en total silencio ante la belleza de las melodías llegadas de Irlanda. Esto cambiaria muy rápido pues el Grupo Danzario Alma Mater perteneciente a la Universidad de La Habana llevo a niñas y niños a bailar al ritmo de melodías de la Isla Esmeralda en un pequeño taller que es- peramos que pueda convertirse en un espacio ha- bitual donde la música y danza de la Éire celta puedan ser enseñadas y aprendidas. El Prado habanero acogió la segunda parte de esta fiesta que recorre el orbe. A las tres de la tarde los participantes en el proyecto cultural-co- munitario Imagen3 quedaron en sus asientos en espera, como niños ante un mago, de algo inusual. En esta ocasión a Alexander Suarez se le unió el también alumno de uilleann, Luis Gutiérrez, quien además tocó el bodhrán en el grupo Sean- Am junto a Angélica Góngora (quien siempre nos maravilla con sus interpretaciones al violín). Otra vez contamos con la presencia de Alma Mater gran parte del grupo de gran fuerza sensu- alidad dando muestras de cuanto se puede hacer siendo autodidactas. Sin dudas hay mucho en lo que trabajar pero hay algo seguro el próximo International Uilleann Piping Day se celebrara en Cuba con la misma pasión.
