Píobaire, An 9 3 12 20130712 12 I N 1998 JANET KENNEDY, an Irish-American weaver, writer, fan of Irish music and pa- tron of the arts, died tragically young from cancer at just 43 years of age. Artist Édaín Ní Dhomhnaill nursed her for several months in San Francisco before Janet sadly passed on. Some years later, Édaín got a call from Janet’s attorney, saying that in the event of her brother’s death, the remainder of her estate was to go to a charity of Édaín’s choice. Édaín thought hard about charities befitting Janet’s wishes and in- terests. Janet loved traditional Irish music and the uilleann pipes in particular and felt the sound of the pipes could transport you to another world. That, combined with her desire to support creativity in children, made Na Píobairí Uilleann an obvious candidate. Janet’s legacy ensured that a substantial number of practice sets were added to our Pipes-On-Loan scheme, and over the last number of years has allowed numerous children to get started on the uilleann pipes, with most purchasing their own set after the loan period. This in turn provides on-going opportunities for pipe-makers. Janet’s attorney was delighted with the choice and felt it certainly would have pleased her greatly. Janet’s legacy will certainly be woven into the lives countless children for years to come. Na Píobairí Uilleann has a hugely positive im- pact on the lives of people across a widely var- ied global demographic including young people, boys and girls, men and women of all ages and nationalities, people with visual and other dis- abilities, people with different religious back- grounds, settled and travelling people. To ~LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY ~ “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others” (Pericles c. 495 – 429 BC). continue our on-going work in promoting and protecting the uilleann pipes we have initiated a Legacy Programme and invite members to con- sider leaving a legacy that would have a last- ing impact.
