Píobaire, An 9 3 4 20130712 4 L IAM MCNULTY has donated a set of photo- graphic slides taken at NPU events in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including the picture at right, showing Séamus Ennis playing in The Plasterers’ Hall, the premises in East Essex Street (now de- molished) that we occupied for a few years up to 1979. Another image of Séamus Ennis came to us in the form of an original water-colour portrait by the artist Tony Kelly, donated by the artist through the good offices of Mick Slevin. Mike Mullins has donated a set of original posters for the Saint Louis Tionól, and we received from Bríd Talty a complimentary copy of her newly-pub- lished book As We Met . . ., Local and Cultural His- tory, Kilfarboy 1880-1980, Told through the life of Martin Talty, which amounts to a history of music in West Clare over Martin Talty’s lifetime. In April we enjoyed a visit from the renowned Hun- garian bagpiper and researcher Zoltán Szabó and his wife, and they donated books, CDs and a DVD relating to the Hungarian bagpipe to our library. Richie Piggott donated a CD recording containing miscellaneous tracks of early 20th c. American pipers Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to exchange pub- lications, and we also subscribe to relevant periodicals. Complete or near-complete runs of many of these publi- cations are available to members in our library. Publica- tions recently received include the following: Pipers’ Review / Iris na bPíobairí – Magazine of the Irish Pipers’ Club, Seattle. Vol XXXII No 1, Winter 2013 Piping Times – Magazine of the College of Piping, Glasgow. Vol. 65, Nos. 7, 8 & 9 Chanter – Journal of the Bagpipe Soc., Summer 2013 Common Stock – Journal of the Lowland and Border Pipers’ Society, Vol 30 no. 1, June 2013 English Dance & Song – Magazine of the English Folk Dance & Song Society, Summer 2013 Annual Report of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann, 2013 The Living Tradition – Magazine, Issues 95 (Mar / Apr 2013) & 96 (June / July 2013) Eighteenth-Century Ireland / Iris an dá chultúr – Journal of the Eighteenth-Century Ireland Soci- ~ DONATIONS & ACQUISITIONS ~ Liam McNulty search is a lot easier to undertake – so long as the young piper is made aware of what to search for. It is not uncommon to come across pipers at workshops – some playing for more than a few years – who had never heard record- ings of Ennis, Clancy, Doran etc. Listening to the acknowledged masters of the instrument is probably more important than learning a new tune and I would urge teachers of piping to make listening to such recordings a part of their tuition.
