9 1 6 20130207 6 T HE BOARD OF NA PÍOBAIRÍ UILLEANN has decided to increase the current annual subscription rates of €45 and €19, for full and concession (un-waged/junior/senior) members respectively, to €50 and €25 with effect from Febru- ary 1st 2013. The current sub- scription rates have remained unchanged since 2005 during which time consumer prices have increased by 17%. It has been possible to avoid in- creasing the subscription rates by constantly improving the ef- ficiency and effectiveness of op- erations of NPU in order to free up funding for new and ex- panded services. As a result of this proactive approach the range of services provided by NPU has increased extensively over the past eight years to in- clude the provision of an exten- sive online digital archive SOURCE, pipe-making training, ever-increasing outreach tuition services, live broadcasts on NPU TV and additional public per- formance programmes. NPU's main source of funding is from the Arts Council/An Comhairle Ealaoin. However, due to a reduction of €12,000 (3.5%) in that funding for 2013 and due to reduced sales and the constant erosion of profit margins on pub- lications, it is important that the organisation takes additional actions at this time. The in- crease in membership subscriptions rates is just one step in a continuous review process de- signed to deliver value for money for our mem- bers and is an action considered prudent by the Board in the current economic climate. When considered in the context of the Arts Council grant-in-aid from central government being reduced effectively by 7.8%, the reduction in the level of the 2013 Arts Council grant to NPU is a good and welcome outcome. We are very grateful to the Arts Council members, management and staff for their continued sup- port of Na Píobairí Uilleann. Books and recordings of traditional music are available to members at discounted prices from our web shop and members also re- ceive copies of our member's magazine, An Píobaire, five times a year.
