Píobaire, An 8 5 3 20121206 GENEROUS DONATION FROM MICHAEL FLATLEY A S NOTED in the last edition of an An Píobaire, NPU are most grateful to Michael Flatley, for his very generous donation of a full set of Leo Rowsome pipes. The playing capabilities and design character- istics of Rowsome pipes have always been a subject of serious study by aspiring pipers and makers and so this instrument will be invalu- able to NPU members for study, copying and playing, in time to come. NPU SUCCESSFUL IN IRISH ARTS COUNCIL'S RAISE: BUILDING FUNDRAISING CAPACITY INI- TIATIVE We recently received confirmation that we were successful in our application to the Arts Council under the RAISE fundraising initiative. NPU participated in a highly competi- tive application process, and was one of eight organisations finally selected. In view of our develop- ment programme for piping tu- ition, pipe making study and training, research and all of the activities of NPU this is an opportunity of major importance. NPU will receive assis- tance, advice and mentoring support and also funding towards a full time fundraising staff position for two years. The total value of this award to NPU is estimated at €100,000. The initiative came about as a result of a request to the Arts Council from the Minister for Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan TD. The project will be guided by a specialist team composed of the company 2INTO3 and Kings- ley Aikins of Networking Matters and should greatly help to develop NPU’s fund raising ca- pacity. Our appreciation and thanks are due to all of the team who developed the material and who conducted the presentations which had a successful outcome. FURTHER PIPING CLASSES IN IRELAND Weekly uilleann piping classes are now up and running in Drogheda, Dundalk and Portlaoise as a result of the Music Generation project. This project, funded by U2 and the Ireland Fund along with local partners has been set up to help young people get access to a music ed- ucation in their own locality. It is great to see piping included in the initiative. Weekly classes are now also running in Dublin schools, Scoil Mhuire, Primary School Marino and Drimnagh Castle Secondary School with the sup- port of Dublin City Council. All of this is helping to extend availability of uil- leann piping to those locations where in- strument access and teacher availability were problems in the past. FUNDRAISING I would encourage members to buy some of the greeting cards that we have recently published, with images all drawn from sources in NPU’s archive and library. The proceeds from the sale of these cards will be a useful addition to our re- sources. Dave Hegarty 3
