8 4 3 20120927 SOUTH SLIGO SUMMER SCHOOL T HE FRUITS of good teaching and piping were well demonstrated during the South Sligo Summer School in July last when a concert of music was held to celebrate the musi- cal works of Brian Gallahar who has taught pip- ing to many at that school over so many years. Brian in his formative years enjoyed the friend- ship of Willie Clancy, Dan O’Dowd, Matt Kier- nan and so many others. The representative gathering of per- formers at the concert paying trib- ute to Brian’s outstanding teaching and piping promotion, included Neillidh Mulligan, Ronan Browne, Ciarán Ó Máille and John Butler as well as a host of other musicians and traditional singers and dancers who have enjoyed music making with Brian and wife Maev, (also a piper) over the years. In the early years of Na Píobairí Uilleann Brian provided much needed help to pipers in dire need of replacement reeds. DUTCH TIONOL Members are reminded of the 28th Annual Dutch Uilleann Piper’s Club Tionól running on 21 to 23 September 2012. This popular event is likely to be well supported by the piping community in Holland which continues to pro- duce fine pipers and reed makers. EXTENDED PIPING CLASS FACILITIES IN IRELAND Na Píobairí Uilleann, in conjunction with Music Generation, will conduct piping classes in Co. Laois for September 2012. Similarly in conjunction with Co. Louth Vocational Educa- tion Committee, Music Generation will help young people gain access to vocal and music instrument tuition including piping in their local area. The Music Generation initiative has seed funding from U2 and The Ireland Fund. These endeavours are most welcome and will extend piping to regions which produced many fine players in times past. CO. WESTMEATH, IRELAND In partnership with Co. West- meath Vocational Education Committee, Na Píobairí Uilleann are holding piping classes in Kin- negad, Co. Westmeath, beginning Monday 17th September. This further music facility recalls the great work done over so many years by the late great Willie Reynolds of Athlone who worked tirelessly to teach and help many pipers in their musical careers. Willie’s teaching was of course in- spired by Leo Rowsome who provided many of the instruments for those learners so many years ago. THE ACE AND DEUCE OF PIPING CONCERT OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC, SONG & DANCE This takes place in Liberty Hall, Dublin, Ire- land on Sunday – October 7th 2012. This year’s line up will feature a Piping Quartet, also Pat Mitchell on pipes and Tommy Peoples (fiddle) Harry Bradley (flute) with sean nós dancing from Seosamh Ó Neachtain; Paddy Ryan and Frank Jordan playing fiddle & flute 3
