Píobaire, An 8 3 6 20120622 6 ~ NEWS & EVENTS ~ GOOD PIPING COURTNEY’S ‘UNION PIPES’ N ICHOLAS CAROLAN has expanded the talk that he delivered in NPU last December into a comprehensive account of the subject of the name of our instrument. Entitled Courtney’s ‘Union Pipes’ and the Terminology of Irish Bel- lows-Blown Bagpipes, it is available as a PDF download from www.itma.ie O N WEDNESDAY 27TH JUNE the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan T.D. formally opened the NPU pipe- making training facility in Clonshaugh, and launched the three-year full-time pipe-making course based there. The facility was commissioned in 2011 and has been used up to this to deliver short-term courses in pipe and reed-making, passing on skills to 80 trainees. This centre has been established with capital fund- ing received from The Department of Arts, Her- itage and Gaeltacht, and the support of Anne Goodwin of Laois Partnership Company along with LEADER companies in Donegal, Carlow, Fingal and Meath. NPU has also received finan- cial support from The Arts Council and The Crafts Council of Ireland to assist with the research work and the development of the training courses. A further significant contributory factor has been the on-going fund-raising, donations and voluntary work by NPU and its membership and friends. We are very pleased to acknowledge the generous do- nation of equipment by The Irish Times Ltd. The event also marked the launch of a con- certed fund-raising campaign by NPU to make up the current funding shortfall of €50,000 (€150,000 in total) in each of the next three years in order to deliver on the full programme of necessary part-time and full-time courses. Donations can be made at www.pipers.ie/donate or by sending donations to Na Píobairí Uil- leann, 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin 1 T HE PREMIERE of the film Good Piping, by American film maker Davis Watson, will take place in the Irish Film Institute, Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 on July 1st at 2:00pm.
