Píobaire, An 8 3 4 20120622 4 E AMONN CEANNT, piper and revolutionary, features in two of our recent acquisitions. Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has donated to NPU a framed print of Sean O’Sullivan’s fa- mous portrait of Ceannt, and the Allen Library facilitated us a few months ago by allowing us to make a photographic copy of a scrapbook assembled by Ceannt and (after his execution) his family. This has been added to our library and is available for study by visitors. A chanter by Robbie Hughes was donated to our Pipes-on-Loan scheme by Jay Salter and will be allocated shortly to a student. Tony Kearns has donated copies of a set of recent photographs of Peadar O’Loughlin, and Dave Hegarty a copy of the 2012 St. Louis Tionól programme. ~ DONATIONS & ACQUISITIONS ~ Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to exchange pub- lications. Complete or near-complete runs of many of these publications are available to members in our library. Publications recently received include the following: Chanter – Journal of the Bagpipe Soc., Summer 2012 Piping Today – Magazine of the National Piping Cen- tre, Glasgow. Issue 57, 2012 Piping Times – Magazine of the College of Piping, Glasgow. Vol. 64, Nos. 8 & 9 Common Stock – Journal of the Lowland and Border Pipers’ Society, Vol 29 no. 1, June 2012 Crónán – Newsletter of Cumann Píobaireachta Thar- lach MacSuibhne, Donegal. Imleabhar 1, Aibreán 2012 Treoir – Magazine of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Iml. 44 uimh. 1 English Dance & Song – Magazine of the English Folk Dance & Song Society, Spring and Sum- mer 2012 etc. made the workshops invaluable learning experiences. VISITS OF THE MINISTER FOR ARTS, HERITAGE AND THE GAELTACHT Good coverage of the tionól with several pho- tographs have appeared in the local newspaper, and pipers based in or from Kerry got a chance to display their choices of music. Kerry is steeped in the history and lore of the pipes and the resurgence of the piping in the county was duly acknowledged by the several welcome visits of Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan TD. We were very assured by the presence of the Minister, as he launched the Rolling Wave CD, of the per- formance of the young uilleann pipers. We are heartened by Minister Deenihan’s keen interest in our work, our long-term mission and our plans for implementation of our development programme. Broadcaster, musician and film- maker Philip King who was a keynote speaker at the launch spoke well upon the importance of music and other art forms in the present eco- nomic and social climate. The big daytime and late night sessions, the so- ciable nature and joviality which always ac- companies a tionól were in much in evidence in Listowel. Old jokes and punchlines were again shared as people chatted and exchanged piping tips and gave of valuable advice. With the pipes we are always learning and seeking to play better. Long may it continue as we set about our work in preparation for the future. We will be back in Listowel next year on May 24th, so book early. FUND-RAISING We need to raise funds to deliver on the full programme of necessary part-time and full- time courses at PIPECRAFT. A sum of €50,000 in each of the next three years (€150,000 in total) is required to make up our funding short- fall. We urge all members to consider how you may help in this campaign. Donations can be made at www.pipers.ie/donate or by sending donations to Na Píobairí Uilleann, 15 Henri- etta Street, Dublin 1. Dave Hegarty, Chairman
