“Pead Buí Ó Loingsigh (1820-1900): Poet and Piper from Baile Bhuirne”

Presented by Cormac Ó hAodha

From 8:30pm, Thursday 15th January 2026

This talk will present an exploration of the songs of Pead Buí, situating them within the vibrant and enduring Múscraí singing tradition in which several of his compositions remain alive today. Drawing on a wide range of sources—including fragmentary references in 20th-century published literature and oral testimony preserved in archival collections such as the National Folklore Collection (The Main Manuscript and The Schools Collections)—the research brings together dispersed evidence to illuminate the life and work of this compelling songwriter. The aim is to establish a reliable account of Pead Buí and his ouevre, offering valuable insight for both scholars and traditional music enthusiasts. Long treasured within the Múscraí tradition, his songs enjoy great popularity in the Múscraí singing tradition for their words as much as for their very musical and singable airs.

The livestream will appear below on the day. Until then, watch Mary Friel and and Irene Martin in conversation with Caitlín Nic Gabhann:
