12~ Flight of the Earls ~The Flight of the Earls in 1607 was awatershed event in Irish history. Itssignificance has been reflected in thenumber and range of events organised tomark the 400th anniversary, not least in thefield of traditional music, several of particularinterest to pipers.The Earls’ departure from Ireland in 1607was, at the time, a tactical move, an attempt tosecure assistance for their cause. Their failureto achieve their aim of enlisting enough helpto support a return to Ireland and a resump-tion of the resistance to Elizabeth’s imperial-ist policies, opened the way, two years later,for the plantation of Ulster, when nearly 7,600square miles in the north of the country –almost a quarter of the land area of Ireland –was confiscated and allocated to English andScottish settlers.
