The review of 2007, which appears onour website, shows that the last yearwas a highly productive and creativeone for Na Píobairí Uilleann thanks to thehard work, creativity and dedication of ourboard, staff, members and voluntary support-ers. In the area of performance, the monthlyrecitals held in The Cobblestone in Dublin’sSmithfield are now one of the most populartraditional music events in the city. An addedbonus is that all these recitalsare recorded for our websiteand archive. Our series Ceolsa Chlub, organised by andfocussing on younger playersin our headquarters, has simi-larly attracted great interest. Iknow that staff and the partic-ipants of the touring project,Piperlink, put considerableeffort into the production andpresentation of this venturewhich travelled throughoutIreland and was a great suc-cess in terms of making theuilleann pipes accessible topeople in areas where it may be difficult tohear the instrument. One of the facets of thisproject which most impressed me was that itmanaged to strike a fine balance betweenmeeting the needs of newcomers to the instru-ment and those people who were well versedin the history, music and mechanics of thepipes. Another impressive feature of the tourwas that those taking part ensured the repre-sentation of a range of piping styles. Thenumber of people wishing to learn the pipeshas been rising for some time now and inresponse to this, we have made an additional30 sets of pipes available for the pipes-on-loan scheme. Our classes in Henrietta St con-tinue to be well attended and it is gratifyingthat so many young people are still attractedto uilleann piping despite the labyrinth ofmusical genres available to them these days. Our publication record for theyear was exemplary, high-lights being The Dance Musicof Séamus Ennis by PatMitchell and the CDs byEmmet Gill and Eliot Grasso. The first volume of the DVDin the series Piper’s Choicefeaturing Liam O’Flynn,Tommy Keane and RonanBrowne was launched byCathal Goan, Director Generalof RTÉ, at the end of January. This is an exciting new ven-ture in which highly-respectedcontemporary pipers play some of theirfavourite tunes and discuss why they mean somuch to them in terms of the composition ofthe individual tunes, the tradition from whichthey were sourced and the technique and vari-ations which are employed to embellish andenrich them. In its entirety, the series will givean insight into the approach of some of the3continued on page 4 –
