8Two recent publications may be of someinterest to pipers. The first of these isRon Kavana’s elaborately producedbook and four CD package Irish Ways, sub-titled “The story of Ireland in song, music andpoetry”.Its significance for pipers lies in the fact thatthere are four pipers featured on the record-ings: Mick Coyne, Paddy Keenan, TomásLynch and Leonard Barry. Unfortunately, apart from a certain trademark feature reveal-ing the presence of Mick Coyne on track 1.7,there is no indication of who plays what. The other publication is entitled Nótaí and isa tunebook consisting of transcriptions of themusic from the three most recent CDs issuedby the band Lúnasa – Sé, The KinnittySessions and Redwood. This is the secondsuch publication from the band; their firstthree CDs were treated in a similar way inLúnasa, The Music 1996 – 2001.The transcriptions and accompanying noteson the tunes, by piper and band memberCillian Vallely, provide the reader with themeans of getting to grips with the tune setsand their backgrounds. They are particularlywelcome for the many newly-composed tunesthat are included, by Cillian and his brotherNiall, Emer Mayock, and many others. Tuneshave an often ephemeral existence and it’sgreat to have these new compositions placedon the printed record. This book is a useful addition to the tradition-al music shelf.~ Recent Publications ~
