Notes & Narratives – Irish Traditional Music in Germany: Nationalism, Nostalgia & Intercultural Transactions
Join us on Thursday 17th September for Notes & Narratives with Felix Morgenstern.
Notes & Narratives is a monthly series that brings traditional music, song and dance to life through performance, storytelling and conversation with leading traditional Irish musicians artists and researchers. This month’s speaker, Felix Morgenstern, will discuss ‘Irish Traditional Music in Germany: Nationalism, Nostalgia & Intercultural Transactions’. This talk locates the experiences of German Irish traditional music practitioners, past and present, in the broader framework of modern European history.
Drawing on over ten years of interviews and historical inquiry, Felix will demonstrate how German musicians’ adoption of Irish traditional music has bridged the shameful disjuncture caused by the Nazi appropriation of German folk music. Additionally, Felix demonstrates the advantage—both musically and in status and authority—of middle-class, relatively wealthy German musicians with the means to travel to Ireland, where they acquire prestige and musical expertise through their interactions with local practitioners.
