Píobaire, An 8 2 4 20120411 4 J AYE GRIGSBY, sister of the late Bernard Grigsby of Clarksville, West Virginia, has donated a full set of Koehler & Quinn pipes in C which were part of Bernard’s extensive col- lection of musical instruments. The set is in fine working order thanks to the ministrations of Benedict Koehler prior to the set coming over to Dublin. A copy of Recollections of an Irish Judge, con- taining an account and picture of piper “Big Joe McDonnell” has been donated by Emmett Gill. ~ DONATIONS & ACQUISITIONS ~ tially in 1971, became and still remains a stan- dard text for the study and appreciation of Irish and related ethnic music. The sudden death of Leo Rowsome in 1970 left pipemaking in a perilous state and Breandán greatly encouraged the efforts of Dan O’Dowd in his gallant work in reed-making activities. From this effort in the early days of Na Píobairí Uil- leann, many fine reed makers and pipe makers went on to develop their skills. All of this com- plemented the work of Matt Kiernan and others, thereby extending their pipemaking knowledge to those with the dedication to become pipemak- ers and repairers. This emphasis helped to ensure that the number of good instruments in some way met the increasing demand for pipes. For- mal and informal lessons, his almost single- handed compilation of An Píobaire, and every other method of knowledge transfer available to him, were other essential parts of Breandán’s plan for the piping and related music develop- ment. Breandán worked on several projects at the same time, and typically encouraged many others to do the same, thus greatly raising the standard of traditional music knowledge and encouraging writing, discussion and analysis on so many top- ics. His journal of Irish music, Ceol, the first edi- tion of which was issued in 1963, was another labour of his love for the music and song. The editorials, high quality articles, song and tune notation set a standard for academics and researchers and his evaluations and comments therein caused many to smile, not to mention the extension of the boundaries of music knowledge and appreciation. His understanding of the vari- ous strands of the music traditions of Ireland and beyond led many to his door and to enjoy his friendship. His love of the Irish language caused him to put some of the notes in his various col- lections into Irish, not as an exclusivist move but, I believe, to encourage study of the language and of its inextricable linkage with the various ele- ments of music, song and related folk traditions. Above all Breandán loved a good tune and he loved to see good music and knowledge being put at the disposal of both accomplished musi- cians and learners. He took a personal interest in the progress of all. As we work on various projects and activities in these times, we can recall Breandán’s ambitions and hopes for pip- ing and the music generally and be renewed in our efforts to follow his great service to tradi- tional music. Dave Hegarty Chairman Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to exchange pub- lications.
