50NORA MURRAY ROBERTSON.rr- .. - ... J fl I.JIp- ip jFa a 1.TiI:r1a1lla ic 4 !I TOOK down this ballad in September, 1904, from the singing of KITTY DUFFY, ofFawans, in Kilmacrenan. It is a local song, humorous in a rough-and-ready fashion, dealing with an incident and people still well remembered in the country round, and tellshow a man and his wife, who owned a poteen still, contrived to evade the vigilance of theKilties, or soldiers of a Highland regiment, sent to find the still. The woman feastedthem on bannocks and beer while the man hid away the plan 1 used for making the poteen. The hi-lingual character of the song is interesting, showing how familiar the twolanguages are to the people in this part of Donegal.Mr. Hughes recorded the air. Tradition has it that once upona time, about an hundred years ago, a man was going to be hanged for stealing some-thinga sheep maybe. He was asked what it was he would like before he died. So heasked for his pipes, and marched to the gallows playing thisthe war-march of his ownclan. He was a MaciJillian. Some people consider this to be a march of the MacPhersons. I should beobliged for some further information. H. H.31 Ballad or Wlmacrenan.()F
