28kind of bagpipe consisting of a bag or skin with two brass tubes, one of which formedthe mouthpiece and the other the chanter. Gerbert has given a drawing of one froma MS. of St. Blaise, of the ninth century, in which the chanter has holes. Figures ofsuch an instrument exist in several MSS. in, among other libraries, those of the BritishMuseum, Boulogne, and Angers. A stringed instrument having four coarse strings, whichaccording to Gerson were stru k with sticks, was also called a Chor zs. M. de Coussemakergives a figure of an instrument which he calls by this name, from a manuscript ofBoulogne, of the ninth century, and observes that the form of the instrument i nearlythe same in all manuscripts from the ninth to the eleventh centu y.Was the instrument called in Ireland and Scotland a Uruit the same as the WelshTellrn, and if so, were they of the same kind as the instrument now known as the harp; r Irisb 3 OI1( SOII 1 $oci tp.and if not, was either of them a harp; and if so, which? It is usually assumed that JoUrna 0the Welsh and Irish instruments were the same, and that they were true harps.
