Culture Night 2022 with Na Píobairí Uilleann
, ,

Culture Night is brought to you by the Arts Council; it is a national moment, celebrating culture, creativity and the arts and seeks to actively promote the belief that rich and varied culture is alive, treasured and nurtured in people’s lives, today and every day.

Na Píobairí Uilleann invites you to our Headquarters in a historical Georgian building, located on one of Ireland’s most architecturally important streets. Every hour there will be a short presentation on the history of the uilleann pipes and a demonstration of the instrument, followed by an uilleann piping recital from some leading players of the instrument with refreshments.

Tours will take place every hour from 6-10pm – free admission, no booking required.

Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event 2021
, , ,

The Breandán Breathnach Commemorative Event takes place annually in Henrietta Street on the first Saturday in December. The event celebrates the life and achievements of Breandán Breathnach. Breandán Breathnach was one of the most significant figures in uilleann piping in the twentieth century, as a piper, organizer, researcher and collector. The events of the day celebrate all aspects of Breandán’s legacy and include piping tuition, reedmaking tuition, a lecture and piping performance, followed by a social gathering with informal music.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday 4th December 2021 and will honour the contribution of piper, reedmaker, pipemaker, and teacher Dan O’Dowd. Dan was a close friend of Breandán’s. The event will include classes in uilleann piping with Eugene Lambe and Donncha Keegan. There will also be a reedmaking workshop with Cillian Ó Briain. The evening’s activities will feature an open discussion “Memories of Dan O’Dowd”, which will be hosted by broadcaster Peter Browne and which will include a contribution from Dan’s granddaughter Deirdre Leech. It will provide an opportunity for some of Dan’s many friends and students to share their recollections of Dan. The formal events of the day will finish with a solo piping recital featuring three performers: John O’Brien, Noel Pocock, and Nollaig Mac Cárthaigh.

*In line with Government restrictions, all events will be limited capacity and all attendees will be required to provide a Covid 19 Cert (being fully vaccinated or recovered from COVID-19 within the previous 6 months) and a valid photo ID.
