9 4 9 20130930 9 D UNCAN GILLIS, the proprietor of NORTH- WIND INSTRUMENTS, has loaned us one of the attachments that he has developed to allow uilleann pipers to bring the ‘C’ below bottom ‘D’ into their playing. His “Low-C Foot Joint” slides securely onto the tenon at the bottom of most chanters. When pressed onto the knee the slider is forced to the bottom of the outer sleeve, sealing the unit and closing the chanter as normal. When raised the sleeve drops to the posi- tion shown in the illustration, and the bottom ‘D’ can be sounded. When in contact with the knee but not fully depressed, the low ‘C’ is sounded. The device can be modifed to suit different chanters, and a small toolkit is provided for this purpose. Many Irish tunes are so positioned on the scale that they have to be played higher than the piper might wish, due to the tune including a ‘C’ as a lower leading note.
